EDO DECIDES 2020

The 2020 Edo State Gubernatorial Election occurred on 19 September 2020. This was one of the major elections to be conducted during the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria, which makes it a useful case study for the conduct of elections during emergencies.

Despite isolated infractions in some areas and the election not being Covid-19 compliant, the election as generally peaceful, and had an impressive voter turnout. Observers however noticed that vote buying was dominant by political parties, and security agents present lacked coordination and synergy.

Prior to the Edo state elections, The Electoral Hub, an organ of the Initiative for Research, Innovation, and Advocacy in Development (IRIAD), published technical briefs with recommendations on how INEC and other stakeholders can safeguard the integrity of the elections.
